How to use the Secret Santa Questionnaire

    1. Choose who it's for

Coworkers, Friends, Family or Kids. Each one starts you off with a list of questions that fit.

    2. Pick the questions

Remove any you don't want, add more from the list, or write up to five of your own.

    3. Send it

Tap Make my questionnaire, then copy the questionnaire link, copy the questions as text, or print them.

    The questions that matter most

Long questionnaires get skipped. These are the answers a Santa uses most:

    • The wish list. “Three things you’d love to get” does more work than any other question.
    • The “no thanks” list. Knowing someone hates scented candles keeps a gift out of the regift pile.
    • Allergies and foods they avoid. Edible gifts are popular, so this one matters more than it looks.
    • What they already have plenty of. Mugs, socks and candles are the usual suspects.

Ten to twelve questions is plenty, and everyone can skip what they don’t want to answer.

    Secret Santa questionnaire for coworkers

At work, keep it light and work-appropriate. The Coworkers list leaves out clothing sizes, ages, alcohol and anything too personal, and leans on coffee orders, snacks, desk upgrades and hobbies. If gift cards are allowed at your office, the gift card question makes life easy for anyone who doesn’t know the person well.

Secret Santa questionnaire for family, friends and kids

For family, the list adds sizes (only if people are comfortable sharing), sports teams and whether they’d rather get a thing or an experience. For friends, it swaps in scents, a cozy night in and the small treat they’d never buy themselves. For kids, it’s short: age, favorite characters, how they like to play, and a wish list.

    Copy-and-paste Secret Santa questionnaire

Here are 12 Secret Santa questions for coworkers to paste into a message.

    1. Coffee, tea or something else? What’s your usual order?
    2. Sweet or salty snacks?
    3. What do you do for fun?
    4. Favorite colors
    5. Favorite snacks or treats
    6. A show, movie or book you love right now
    7. Allergies or foods you avoid
    8. Anything you’d rather not get?
    9. Things you already have plenty of (mugs, candles, socks…)
    10. Gift cards: yes, no, or only for certain places?
    11. Something that would make your desk or workday nicer
    12. Three things you’d love to get (within the budget)

For a family exchange, swap the coffee, desk and gift card questions for clothing sizes, sports teams and “a thing or an experience?”. The Family list in the tool does this for you.

    Printable Secret Santa questionnaire template

Tap Make my questionnaire, then Print. The printable version is plain black on white, with your title at the top, a line for a name and room to write under every numbered question, so it works on any office printer.

    When to send it

Send it about a week before you draw names, with a deadline a day or two before the draw. Once names are drawn with the Secret Santa generator, each Santa gets their person’s answers.

    Frequently asked questions

    Where are the answers stored?

Not on our side. Answers are packed into a link on the person's own device, and they choose who to send it to. Anyone with the link can read them: it isn't encrypted, so share it like a private message.

Is it free? Are there limits?

It's free, with no signup. A questionnaire can have up to 20 questions, including up to five you write yourself, and each answer can be up to 300 characters. The printout has no watermark, just a small line with our web address at the bottom.

Can I get the questionnaire as a PDF?

Yes. Tap Make my questionnaire, then Print, and choose Save as PDF as the destination (in Safari on a Mac, use the PDF menu). On an iPhone, tap Share, then Save to Files.

Can I see everyone's answers in one place?

No. Nothing is stored on a server, so there's no dashboard. Each person sends you their answers link; after the draw, forward each one to the right Santa. In a small group, people can post their links in the group chat.

Can someone change their answers after sending them?

Yes. They edit their answers, tap Get my answers link again, and send the new link. The old link keeps showing the old answers.
