What is JPEG XL?

JPEG XL (file extension .jxl) is a modern image format from the JPEG committee, finished in 2022. It compresses better than JPG, supports transparency and HDR, and can even repackage an existing JPG losslessly into a smaller file. Photo editors and image sites have started saving and serving JXL, which is why more people are running into these files.

Why convert JXL to PNG?

Support is still patchy. Apple devices and some photo editors open JXL, but many Windows apps, office programs, websites and upload forms don’t. PNG opens everywhere and is lossless, so converting to PNG gives you a file that works anywhere without losing any detail or transparency.

PNG or JPG?

Choose PNG for graphics, screenshots, images with transparency and anything you’ll keep editing. For photos you just want to send or upload, the JXL to JPG converter makes much smaller files.

Frequently asked questions

What is a JXL file?

JXL is JPEG XL, a newer image format designed to replace JPG. It makes smaller files at the same quality and can store transparency, HDR and lossless images, but many apps can't open it yet.

Are my images uploaded?

No. The JPEG XL decoder runs in your browser on your device, so nothing is sent to a server.

Is the PNG an exact copy?

Yes. PNG is lossless, so every pixel of the decoded JXL is kept, including transparent areas.

Why is the PNG bigger than the JXL?

JPEG XL compresses far better than PNG. A lossless PNG of the same picture is usually much larger; if you only need a photo to share, convert JXL to JPG instead.

Which browsers does it work in?

Current Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and Safari 16.4 or later. Safari 17 and later read JPEG XL themselves; elsewhere this page loads a small decoder the first time you add a JXL file.
