Why convert JPG to PNG?

PNG is lossless: once an image is a PNG, you can open, edit and save it as many times as you like without it getting worse. That makes PNG the better working format for design, editing, printing shops that ask for PNG, and assets you’ll reuse. JPG loses a little quality every time it’s saved.

What converting can and can’t do

Converting changes the format, not the picture. The PNG looks exactly like your JPG, including its background and any compression marks already in it. Photos from phones are turned upright, because the rotation stored in the JPG is applied before saving the PNG.

Going smaller instead

If you want a smaller file rather than a lossless one, convert the other way with the PNG to JPG converter, or to WebP for websites.

Frequently asked questions

Will converting to PNG make the background transparent?

No. A JPG has no transparency to keep, so the PNG has the same solid background. Making a background transparent means cutting out the subject, which is a different job from converting; this page only changes the format.

Does PNG improve the quality?

It can't add back detail the JPG already lost, but it stops further loss: every time you edit and re-save a JPG it degrades a little, while a PNG stays exactly the same.

Do I need a JPG to PNG extension?

No. This page needs no install and keeps your images on your device. Browser extensions for this usually ask for access to every site you visit.

Why is the PNG so much bigger?

PNG stores every pixel without compression loss, so a photo is often 3 to 6 times larger than the JPG. That's the trade for lossless editing.

Are my images uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser on your device; nothing is sent anywhere.
