How to convert HEIC to JPG on iPhone

To stop the problem at the source, go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG instead of HEIC. Photos you’ve already taken stay HEIC, and JPGs take up about twice the space.

When you copy photos to a computer with a cable, Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic makes the iPhone hand them over as JPG. For photos you’ve already got as HEIC files, open this page in Safari, tap Choose photos, and save the JPGs back to Photos when they’re done.

How to convert HEIC to JPG on Mac

Open the photo in Preview, choose File → Export, set Format to JPEG, and save. In the Photos app, select photos and use File → Export → Export Photos with JPEG as the kind. For a batch, this page is quicker: drop them all in and download one ZIP.

How to convert HEIC to JPG on Windows

Windows can open HEIC files once the HEIF Image Extensions and HEVC Video Extensions are installed from the Microsoft Store; the HEVC one usually costs a small fee. You can then open a photo in the Photos app and save a copy as JPG. Without the extensions, drop the files on this page in any browser and you’re done.

How to convert HEIC to JPG on Android

Most recent Android phones can show HEIC photos in Google Photos, but many apps still can’t open them. Open this page in Chrome, tap Choose photos, pick the HEIC files, and download the JPGs.

What is a HEIC file?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the photo format iPhones have used by default since iOS 11 in 2017. It fits a photo of the same quality into roughly half the space of a JPG, which is why Apple chose it. The catch is compatibility: plenty of websites, Windows PCs and older apps still can’t open it, and that’s when you need a JPG.

Frequently asked questions

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser on your own device. Your photos are never sent to a server, so there's nothing for anyone to keep or look at.

Is it free? Are there limits?

It's free, with no daily limit and no watermark. You can convert up to 50 photos in one batch; when they're done, tap Clear and start the next batch. Each photo can be up to 100 MB.

Will the quality get worse?

JPG compresses a little differently from HEIC, so the default quality of 92% keeps photos looking the same to the eye. Set the slider to 100% for the most detail, or pick PNG for a lossless copy. Either way the JPG is usually about twice the size of the HEIC, because HEIC is the more efficient format.

Does it keep the date and location?

By default your JPGs keep the date taken and the camera details, and the GPS location is removed so you can share them safely. Turn off Remove location to keep it, or turn off Keep date and camera info to strip everything. PNGs made here don't include this info.

Can I convert HEIC to JPG in bulk?

Yes. Drop up to 50 photos at once and download them all together as a ZIP. For more, convert them in batches of 50.

Why was one of my photos skipped?

It was probably already a JPG, which happens when an iPhone converts photos as it shares them. Files the tool can't read, like videos, are listed with a short reason; other images such as PNG or WebP are converted too.

Does it work offline?

Yes, once the page and the converter have loaded. After your first photo converts, you can keep going without a connection.
