What is an AVIF file?

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a newer image format built on the AV1 video codec. Websites like it because a photo in AVIF is often much smaller than the same photo as JPG or even WebP. That’s why you end up with .avif files when you save images from shopping sites, news sites and image banks.

Why convert AVIF to PNG?

Browsers open AVIF fine, but many other programs don’t: older versions of Photoshop and Word, many upload forms, and image viewers on older computers. PNG opens everywhere and is lossless, so nothing in the picture changes. It also keeps transparent backgrounds, which makes it the right choice for logos, stickers and cut-outs saved as AVIF.

PNG or JPG?

Pick PNG for graphics, screenshots and anything with a transparent background, or when you’ll keep editing the image. Pick JPG on the AVIF to JPG converter for photos you just want to share: the file will be far smaller.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded?

No. Your browser does the conversion on your own device, so the images never reach a server.

Do I need a browser extension or an app?

No extension needed. Current Chrome, Edge and Firefox can read AVIF, as can Safari on macOS 13 or later and iOS 16 or later, and this page uses that to make the PNG.

Can I convert AVIF to PNG in bulk?

Yes. Drop up to 50 AVIF files at once and download every PNG in one ZIP. For more, run another batch.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the AVIF?

AVIF compresses very hard, while PNG stores every pixel exactly. A 200 KB AVIF can easily become a few megabytes as PNG. If size matters more than perfect detail, convert to JPG instead.

It says my browser can't read AVIF. What now?

Update your browser: Chrome has supported AVIF since 2020, Firefox since 2021, Safari since 2022 (macOS 13 or later, iOS 16 or later) and Edge since 2024. Then try again.
